In our mid-20s my wife and I bought our first piece of vacant land. It was a lake lot for $3,500.00. That tells you how long ago it’s been since we saw mid-20s! Over the years we’ve bought and sold many properties for our personal enjoyment. We’ve never owned more than 1 at a time, never been land barons. Before my dad passed, he was always the one on the tractor (usually a 1940s era Farmall or Ford) planting the food plots. We’ve built a few blinds, cut a few trails, dug our share of fire pits and even put up a few pole barns.

After many years of buying and selling for enjoyment a Realtor friend said, “You know you should get your own real estate license.” So that’s what we did in 2007. My wife, Andrea, helps with the paperwork and rides along on the long trips while I get to do all the fun stuff like walk in the woods and swap hunting stories. We try to remember what we appreciated in a Realtor. We liked good/honest descriptions of properties. It was always frustrating when a property described as “wooded” was really a brush-covered grown-over field. Or the “stream” was nothing more than a drainage ditch that was dry by August. The Realtors that showed up in street shoes and dress pants proved to be SALESPEOPLE and not interested in really HELPING find the right piece of property. Selling vacant land and a house is two different things. We also remember how much we appreciated good communication when we went to sell our property. We were given information about prospective buyers who had asked or looked at our property. We knew where it was being advertised. We didn’t feel forgotten once the listing agreement was signed and remembered only when it was time to pay a commission.

I am an avid sportsman. Turkey and Waterfowl hunting are probably my favorite if I had to narrow it down. What I actually like best is sharing the sport with newcomers and often find myself in the woods and marshes calling and guiding for others rather than carrying a firearm myself. My dad raised me with an appreciation and respect for the outdoors and I have been blessed to be able to pass that tradition to my son with the support of my wife. Hunting also carries a responsibility to nurture and respect wildlife so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.
